The game is still in the Alpha version so it's still very much testing and feedback time for the game. One thing special about this clicker game is that it is based on the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Forgotten Realms campaign and for those familiar with D&D, that is one big world campaign. On the surface, Idke Champions of the Forgotten Realms may look like a regular Formation Strategy clicker type game but again, for those who know D&D, particularly players familiar with the Forgotten Realms, the game is more than what meets the eye. Outright, the game has very good animation graphics (for a clicker), great sounds and awesome musical scores.

It's greatest appeal though would be to players who are familiar with D&D Forgotten Realms and those who may not be familiar but with strong interest to play and get involved with D&D gaming. D&D which started as a multi-player dice based board game in the 1970's and progressed to electronic (battery powered) portable games to computer video games in the 80's, 90's and beyond has come a long long way. The game has many campaigns that takes place in different alternate worlds and the Forgotten Realms setting is one (albeit one of the most popular) of these. It was designed by game designer Ed Greenwood who started developing it way back to 1967 when he was just a young boy. Greenwood created the fantasy world of the Forgotten Realms and everything in it through the years. In the 70's he started playing the D&D table-top RPG dice game. He liked it so much and started to apply his Forgotten Realms setting into the game.

By today's standard, you could say he modded the game. D&D Forgotten Realms became quite well known that in 1986, the popular game publishing company TSR approached Greenwood to work on the official Forgotten Realms campaign for D&D. TSR also acquired the rights to the campaign world from Greenwood and the rest is gaming history. Now that we have an idea about the Forgotten Realms, applying it into the D&D gameplay was simply using the world Greenwood created for the adventures of the characters and the RPG party system used as a standard by the D&D game series. In computer games, instead of the dice and moving your piece on the board, you had to move your party through dangerous locations that may be outside or within dungeons as well as battle monstrous enemies at every turn. This was where formation startegy came in, specially in tight dungeons where the guys in front of the party got pummeled the most except in cases where the attack would come from behind.

Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms has locations, characters and classes from the Forfotten Realms. THe game starts of with a single character, Bruenor the champion Dwarf. Combat is easy, just click, click and click. As the game progresses and you kill enough and earn enough tou start to acquire new characters, you then add Celeste, a human female cleric. As you advance further into the game, you add another champion and before you know it, you’ve got your party in place. One thing that you will notice is that the characters express themselves and what they say is displayed in text boxes during the game. Each champion can be upgraded via their own stats window.

Just click on their portrait to open it. Though going through the game will take you to different areas and locations, unlike in the usual D&D, your champions stay at the left side of the screen while the enemy moves wave after wave towards and beyond them. This is where the formation strategy and combat tactics come in. Finding the right formation for the combination of heroes currently fighting for you will make or break your game. There are champions like Knights and Barbarians which have stronger protection and more oriented towards close range combat and should be placed at the front while the projectile launchers like Archers and support heroes like Clerics are better far behind. Just like Crusaders of the Lost Idols (which was developed by the same company), you can arrange your champions by moving them into the provided formation slots. It will just be up to you to determine the best possible combination depending on character class (as mentioned above) and the weaponry and buffs that they have.

If you've played formation oriented clicker games, you will feel at home with this game. Just continue to upgrade your champions stats and their gear and put them at the right place and the game will practically be running itself in no time. Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms is a very good introduction to Advanced D&D as it features elements, characters and classes taken fron the RPG game series itself. Just remember that in D&D, you can't just leave it running alone as exploration and beating the Dragon is the name of the game. So, for those who love clicker games and like to try out a new one, Idle Champions will give you hours of clicking fun and you get to lay D&D at the same time.
